Sigma Nu is a great experience for any young man. We are a social fraternity who strives to uphold the principles of Love, Truth, and Honor. Founded by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in a period of civil strife known as the Reconstruction. Sigma Nu represented a radical departure from the times. The system of physical abuse and hazing of underclassmen at VMI led to James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley to form the “Legion of Honor” which soon became Sigma Nu Fraternity. Amidst a backdrop of turmoil, North America’s first “Honor” fraternity was established.

      For over a century and a quarter Sigma Nu chapters have shaped the man of integrity. Their challenge for the future is to focus efforts to the fuller realization of the great mission set by our Founders - to build Men of Honor. Sigma Nu means much more than the four years a member will put in while in college. Sigma Nu is a life-long commitment that will continue to give to its members long after graduating from college. The bonds we create while a part of the chapter will last far into adulthood. The three cardinal principles of Sigma Nu are Love, Honor, and Truth. Sigma Nu has founded over 275 chapters at various colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, and is one of the largest fraternities in the world. Indeed, Sigma Nu may be on the threshold of the era of its greatest achievement as it enters the 21st Century.

My parents don’t like fraternities, what should I do?

     Many parents have falsely stereotyped fraternities because of the media’s portrayal the Greek system. To fight these stereotypes, encourage your parents to research the purpose of fraternities or to visit the campus, meet members of the brotherhood, talk to local alumni, and visit our web site.
